The Aegis Frigate screens the fleet against aircraft and submarines with SAMs, sonar and anti-submarine torpedoes. A light deck gun handles surface targets. Tier 2 from the Advanced Naval Yard. The missiles launch from the forward deck cells and keep a target of their own: they go on firing at aircraft while the ship engages a submarine, a boat or the shore, and while the ship is under way.

How to use

Escort every serious fleet with at least one Frigate, or naval strikers and bombers will pick your capital ships apart. Its deck gun is decent against gunboats and coastal targets, but keep it out of missile-boat range. Its sonar detects submerged threats within nine tiles, and its torpedoes reach seven tiles through clear water. These torpedoes target submerged units; missile boats and Barracudas supply the fleet’s surface striking power. Its hull is wider than a tile: it needs two tiles of water abeam and cannot follow a gunboat through a channel a tile wide.

Anecdotes

The real Aegis is the shield of Zeus, borrowed by the US Navy in the 1960s for a radar and missile system built to do the same job: stop what is coming at the fleet before anyone has to dodge it.
