Terms of Service

Last updated

The terms Steel Tide is offered under: what you may do with the game, what a multiplayer server is and is not, and what we promise — which is less than you might hope, and all of it honest.

Steel Tide is a real-time strategy game made by Rene Wang ("we"). These terms apply to the game wherever you play it — in a browser at play.steelti.de, through Steam, from the App Store or from Google Play — to the dedicated server software, and to this website. By playing, you agree to them. If you got the game from a store, that store's own terms apply as well (the Steam Subscriber Agreement, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement, the Google Play Terms of Service): they govern your relationship with the store, and these terms govern your relationship with us.

The game, and what you may do with it

Steel Tide is free to play. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to install and play the game on devices you control, for non-commercial purposes.

The game is source-available under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0: you may study it, modify it, make maps and mods for it and share what you make, for non-commercial purposes, provided that anyone you give a copy to also receives that licence and the required copyright notice. Commercial use of any kind — selling the game or anything made from it, paid or advertised hosting, bundling it into a product or a service — needs our written permission. The licence text is the authority on all of that; these terms neither narrow nor widen it.

Steel Tide, its name, its artwork, its music and its narration are ours and protected by copyright. The typefaces and libraries in it belong to their authors and are used under their own licences.

Fair play

Multiplayer is served by a dedicated server that simulates the whole match, so there is not much a player can cheat about. The rest we ask of you:

  • Do not tamper with, flood, probe or otherwise attack a server, and do not try to reach another player's units or a faction's hidden state.
  • Do not use the name field or the chat to harass, threaten or abuse anyone, to impersonate someone, or to post anything unlawful.
  • Do not use the game or its server software to break the law.

A host may remove anyone from their room, for any reason. On a server we run, we may do the same, and may refuse a connection.

What you make

Your commander name, your chat, the maps you paint in the editor and the saved games you upload to a host are yours. By using them in the game you allow the other players and the server in the room to show, relay and keep them, which is what the feature does; you grant us nothing further, because nothing you make reaches us. You are responsible for what you type and for anything you share.

Multiplayer servers

Steel Tide has no matchmaking and no server of ours that you are connected to by default. Servers are run by players, on hardware they control, under the operator's own rules and on their own responsibility. We provide the server software; we do not run, monitor or moderate other people's servers, and we are not responsible for what happens on them or for whether any of them is available.

If you run a server, you are its operator. You are responsible for the machine, for keeping the software updated, for the people you admit, for what is said on it and for any personal data it handles — the Privacy Policy describes what a server receives. The server software may be run for non-commercial purposes only, under the licence above.

Availability and changes

The game is a work in progress. We may change, add or remove features, maps, units and balance at any time, and we may stop offering the browser version, the server software or the game itself. Saved games are kept on your device, and a new version may not be able to load an old save.

We may change these terms. The current version is always on this page, with the date at the top; a change that matters is also called out in the changelog. Continuing to play after a change means you accept it.

No warranty

The game, the server software and this website are provided "as is" and "as available", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose or non-infringement. We do not promise that the game will be uninterrupted, error-free or free of harmful components, or that any multiplayer server will be available or behave.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, saved games, profits or goodwill, arising out of or in connection with the game, the server software, this website or these terms — whether in contract, tort or otherwise, and even if we were told it could happen. Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you paid us for the game, which is nothing.

Nothing in these terms limits rights that consumer protection law gives you and does not let you waive. If some of the above cannot apply where you live, it applies to the extent it can.

Termination

You may stop using the game at any time; uninstalling it and clearing its data ends the licence. We may end the licence of someone who breaks these terms. The sections that by their nature should survive — what you make, no warranty, limitation of liability — do.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the country in which the developer resides, without prejudice to any consumer protection you are entitled to under the law of the place where you live.
