Looking for a Rusted Warfare alternative? Start with what its players complain about

·by Rene Wang·10 min read

Rusted Warfare's last major update was 1.15, in November 2022. We read its Steam reviews and forum threads, then checked Steel Tide against every complaint we found, including the ones it does not fix.

Rusted Warfare's last major update came out on 12 November 2022. Version 1.15 arrived after ten beta builds, and before that the game shipped a major release about once a year. Nearly four years later there is still no 1.16. People who own the game are looking for an alternative, and the useful way to answer them is to read what they actually say first.

So we did. We went through the game's Steam reviews and its Steam forum, from 2023 to this week, sorted the complaints and put each one next to what Steel Tide does about it. Some it fixes. Some it does not, and those are listed too.

First, to be fair: Rusted Warfare is made by a very small studio. It costs $4.99 on Steam, 96% of its English reviews are positive, and so are 92% of the ones posted in the last thirty days. Nobody here is mocking it. Our other post about it is mostly about what we learned from it.

"Hello? Where's the updates?"

The forum asks the same question every few months:

  • March 2024: "Is this game dead?" and "hello? where's the updates?" A reply pointed to the official Discord: "Apparently an update is in the making."
  • April 2025: "The last update seem to go back in 2022." The answer: "Yes it is, but update is taking time."
  • February 2026: "why no update?" By April the thread had agreed that 1.16 is real and due this year, and one player added that "its practically a joke with the release date."
  • June 2026: "is this game will upgrade no more", posted in English and Chinese.

Part of the trouble is where the news lives. Word of 1.16 is kept in a Discord server and in occasional sneak peeks on a modder's YouTube channel. One player in the February thread could reach neither: "I can't check the updates in the Discord community 'cause of the firewall over here."

Steel Tide: twenty-seven releases between 2 September and 22 October 2026, each with notes on the public changelog. The browser always runs the current build. The App Store and Google Play apps update themselves to that same build without waiting on a store release, and players on all three meet in the same match. That pace belongs to a young game and will slow down eventually. Where you find out will not change: a page on this site, with no account and no Discord needed.

The phone version

Rusted Warfare made its name on Android, which makes this one sting. In September 2026 a player wrote on the Steam forum:

"I can't install Rusted Warfare on Google Play because 'it was made for an older version of android'. I'm on Galaxy S24+"

Google Play stops offering an app to new phones once the Android version it targets falls too far behind, and fixing that takes someone shipping an update.

Steel Tide: the phone apps cost $3.99, paid once, with no ads and no in-app purchases, and they run the same build as the browser. If you would rather not pay, open play.steelti.de in the phone's browser and add it to the home screen. It plays fullscreen, and the whole game is free there. The touch controls were designed for a phone from the start, not carried over from a mouse (how they work).

Pathfinding

This complaint comes back more than any other, from new players and veterans alike:

  • "the unit pathing and self preservation in this game are... terrible. Game is pretty fun and the units are neat, but you are forced to micromanage the smallest actions cause the units try to three stooges themselves to death." (March 2023)
  • "Pathfinding is horribly bad. If you have some units you want to move in a bulk they will get stuck all the time and are hard to manage." (December 2025)
  • "Solid bones, but the pathfinding in this game is a travesty. It's interesting that a game could make me remember how infuriating Tiberian Sun's pathfinding was." (this month)

The line that says the most is from the February 2026 thread, where a player asked what 1.16 would change: "Could you do me a solid and see if they've changed the pathfinding mechanics? Hell, even if that's the only thing they tweaked, I'd be absolutely hyped."

Steel Tide: no RTS gets to call pathfinding solved, and we will not either. A group sent somewhere spreads into a formation and travels on shared routes, so each tank does not have to find its own way through the same choke point. The pathfinder keeps cached terrain and connectivity data for the map, so a big army does not repeat the same search every tick. A unit ordered to Protect stays with what it guards, keeps pace with the formation, and drops the chase when the threat leaves. When units do get stuck, that is a bug report we act on: releases ship several times a week, and you can report it on Discord.

Dropped from a match, with no way back in

From a reviewer with 1,482 hours in the game, in October 2024:

"if you lose the connection somehow, there is no way anymore to find the server and reconnect. Once you are out, you are out … Especially when I am playing more longer games and I am in the middle of building a big base. In previous versions you would be able to find your sever and reconnect."

Steel Tide: a match runs on an authoritative dedicated server, not on one player's machine, and that server keeps your seat while you are gone. Your browser or app holds a reconnect token for the server, so coming back gives you your faction, with its base and army, exactly where you left it. The server also saves a checkpoint of the match every sixty seconds of play.

Finding a game

From a 2021 review: "The problem isn't the game itself, the problem is rolling the hypothetical dice to try to find a decent match, and there rarely ever is one. The difficulty of finding a good game is why i can't give this one a thumbs up. Too bad, I like it." In 2026, much of the forum's front page is still people looking for someone to play with, many of them writing in Russian.

Steel Tide: the multiplayer screen's Browse page lists the public rooms, ours among them, and the apps also list games on your local network. You can run a server yourself with one command and give your friends its address. To be straight about it, we have far fewer players than Rusted Warfare, and at quiet hours a public room may be empty. That is why the AI is built to be a real opponent: it scouts, expands, counters the army it has seen and attacks in escalating waves, and it can take any seat in any match.

Crashes in big battles, and with mods

The most useful thread on the forum this autumn is a fix for big matches that crash. The game runs on Java with a fixed memory ceiling. The fix is to open fallback64.bat in the install folder, raise -Xmx2000M to something like -Xmx8000M, and launch from that file. Your Workshop mods are then gone unless you also add -steam to the end of the line. Reviews say the same about mods: "After subscribing to 3 mods the game crashes" (2020), and "Game crashes multiple times on certain custom maps or with certain mods" (this month).

Steel Tide: there is no Java runtime, no memory flag and no launcher file to edit. It is TypeScript running in a browser tab or a thin app shell. A mod is described in one mod.json, and the game checks every pack against its own validator before loading it, so a pack that fails is refused on import, with the reason. Every mod in the public registry passed the same check before it was listed. Mods add units, buildings and factions. They never overwrite the base game's units, art or rules.

The case for staying

Not everyone in the "why no update?" thread wanted an update. One reply:

"because that game dont need update, its a game that live for its modding community, changing the actualle game will force everyon to update there mod and some mod are not updated anymor so it will split the modding community"

That is a real point, and it is the best reason to stay. Rusted Warfare is still ahead of Steel Tide in several ways:

  • Mods. The Workshop has thousands, built over nearly a decade. Our registry has a handful.
  • People. Its community is far larger: the Discord, the videos, and the Russian- and Chinese-speaking groups.
  • Match size. Rusted Warfare seats ten players. Steel Tide seats eight.

If the mods you play are finished and you are happy with them, a game that never changes again may be exactly what you want.

One complaint Steel Tide will not fix: "a very basic RTS with only 1 ressource." Steel Tide also runs on one resource, metal, plus a power grid you keep out of deficit. That is deliberate. If a second currency is what you are missing, look elsewhere.

Bringing your mods and maps across

If you make Rusted Warfare mods and want your work to live in a game that is still being updated, we will port it for you, free, until December 2026. Ask on Discord. Several Rusted Warfare mods are already in the registry, among them Adolence: City of Sin, FG Rusted League and Attack on Titan: The Rumbling.

A port is a translation, not an emulator: Steel Tide does not run Rusted Warfare's .ini files. The roster, the original art and as much of the behaviour as Steel Tide's mod format can express come across. What the format cannot express is left out.

Maps are simpler. The map editor imports a Rusted Warfare .tmx file directly. Terrain, resource points and supported starting forces come across, custom terrain is approximated, scripts, events and neutral forces are left out, and the import notes tell you what to check before you play.

What will feel familiar

Plenty. You mine metal with extractors on deposits, and an Engineer builds everything you own. Land, sea and air all fight in one match, the sprites are flat and easy to read, and the main menu's first option is a skirmish against the AI. What changes is underneath: one counter table instead of per-unit exceptions (why), transports that carry weight rather than a head count, and a server that runs the match for everyone in it.

Short answers

Is Rusted Warfare still being updated? Its latest major release is 1.15, from 12 November 2022. A 1.16 has been teased on the official Discord, but as of October 2026 it has not shipped.

Can I play my Rusted Warfare mods in Steel Tide? Not by loading the files directly. A mod has to be ported to Steel Tide's format, and until December 2026 we will do that for free. Maps import directly.

Is Steel Tide free? In the browser, yes, with no ads, no account and no in-app purchases. The App Store and Google Play versions are $3.99, paid once.

Does it work on a phone? Yes, in the phone's browser or as the iPhone, iPad or Android app.

Start with the first five minutes, or open the game and play a skirmish.
