20 PvP games you can play in your browser right now

·by Rene Wang·6 min read

No install, no launcher, usually no account: twenty multiplayer games that put you against another human inside a tab, checked in September 2026 — plus two famous ones that are not what they look like.

The best thing about a browser game is the sentence "click this". No download, no launcher, no patch to wait through, and in most cases no account. The worst thing about browser games is the lists of them, which are largely copied from each other and include games that shut down years ago.

So here is a list we checked. Every game below was online in September 2026, every one puts you against real people, and each entry says what kind of fight you are signing up for. Steel Tide is in here too, in its own section, with the same standard applied.

Strategy

OpenFront.io is the biggest real-time strategy game on the web at the moment: a territory game on maps drawn from real geography, where up to a hundred players expand, ally, betray and eventually nuke each other until someone holds 80% of the land. It is open source, the team says it sees around 200,000 players a day, and a Steam version with cross-play arrives on 17 September 2026. We wrote a full comparison.

Territorial.io is the game OpenFront descends from: one developer, David Tschacher, has run it since 2020, and its lobbies are famous for putting hundreds of players on one map. Simpler than OpenFront, and the purest version of the idea.

generals.io is a real-time game on a grid under fog of war: you grow an army from your general's tile, capture cities, and try to find and take the enemy's general. Ranked 1v1, 2v2 and free-for-all up to eight. It has been running since 2016, has a public bot API, and in 2025 a reinforcement-learning paper reported an agent at the very top of its 1v1 ladder.

Chrono Divide is Red Alert 2, in a browser. It is a re-implementation of the original engine that runs against the original game's files, which you have to supply yourself, and it plays multiplayer on the original maps with a ranked ladder. Still in beta, built by one developer, and a remarkable thing to see load in a tab.

Steel Tide is ours: a base-building RTS with thirty-two units across land, sea and air, up to six seats a match, and multiplayer on a dedicated server you can install with one command. It opens in a tab, installs to a phone, and has no account. More on it at the end.

The classics

Lichess is chess, free, with no advertising and no tracking, and the code is open source. It is run by a nonprofit on donations and it reports more than five million games a day, from one-minute bullet to correspondence games that last weeks. If you want the fairest definition of "PvP in a browser", it is this.

TETR.IO is competitive Tetris-style stacking: a ranked 1v1 ladder called Tetra League, quick-play rooms, and a community that treats it as a sport. Free, with an optional supporter subscription.

skribbl.io is draw-and-guess in rooms of up to twenty. Type a name, share a link, and you are playing. It is the browser party game that every "games to play with friends" list opens with, for good reason.

Shooters

Krunker.io is a fast arena shooter with the feel of an old-school FPS, playable as a guest. It was bought by FRVR in 2022, which raised the usual worry about a browser game changing hands, and it is still being updated in 2026.

Shell Shockers is the one where you are an egg. Blue Wizard Digital has run it since 2017, and it reports over 200 million lifetime players. Team and free-for-all modes, cosmetics for sale, nothing that changes the shooting.

Narrow. One is capture the flag with bows, in five-a-side teams, from Pelican Party Studios. Clean, small, and now on Steam too.

Arenas and the .io tradition

Diep.io (2016) is the tank one: shoot shapes, level up, pick a tank class, hunt other players on a persistent server. No account, ten modes, and still the best of its family.

Agar.io (2015) started the whole genre: eat cells, get bigger, get eaten. It reportedly reached five million daily players within weeks of launch, and it is still there.

Slither.io (2016) is the snake version from Steve Howse, who kept ownership of it, and it was still receiving updates in 2026.

Bonk.io is a physics game where up to eight players try to knock each other off a level, with a level editor that has kept it alive since 2016. It survived the death of Flash by being rebuilt.

Curve Fever Pro is the many-player version of the "light cycles" game: steer a curve, cut people off, do not touch anything. Its studio went bankrupt in 2019 and a former employee has kept the game running since, with tournaments still on the calendar in 2026.

Bloxd.io is a voxel sandbox with proper PvP modes inside it: Bedwars, Sky Wars and a survival royale. It is what a lot of people who cannot install Minecraft play instead.

Battle royales and karts

surviv.io shut down in March 2023 and came back in March 2026 on Kongregate, with matches of up to eighty players that run three to five minutes. Suroi.io is the open-source game built in its image while it was gone, and it is still running as well.

ZombsRoyale.io is a 100-player two-dimensional battle royale that lasts about five minutes, from a studio that has kept it updated since 2018.

Smash Karts is a three-minute kart deathmatch with weapons. You need an account to keep progress; you do not need one to play.

Two that are not what they look like

1v1.LOL, the build-and-shoot duel game, shut down on 3 November 2025 on every platform. It is still in most lists you will find, which is exactly the problem with most lists.

Paper.io 2 looks like a territory PvP game and is not one: the other "players" are bots, which you can confirm by playing it in airplane mode. It is a fine single-player toy. It is not on this list.

Steel Tide, with the same honesty

What you get: a full RTS — base, one resource, power grid, a counter table, land, sea and air — in a tab, with no account. Skirmish against three grades of AI, a six-mission campaign, and multiplayer on an authoritative server with reconnect, host pause and checkpoints.

What you do not get: a public lobby. The games above find you an opponent in seconds because thousands of people are already there. Steel Tide's multiplayer is a server that you or a friend run, which means a match is something you arrange rather than something you fall into. That is the honest difference between a game about a hundred strangers and a game about six people who know each other, and it is the one thing on this page we would most like to fix.

Open it and see for yourself. It takes about four seconds.
